Visual Authenticity by Mark N Tompkins
Mark N
Tompkins, although primarily a painter, turned out to be an equally interesting
and authentic scenic artist. His works, in a foolish and sometimes sarcastic
and bizarre way, portray our everyday life. He started painting revolted by the
overall circumstances in the vague value system that did not offer him any thriving
perspective. Realizing the absurdity of the choice and the fact that he was
left to himself, Mark N Tompkins came up with the idea and the decision that he
could seriously deal with such an "ineffectual" and profession. But,
he has been drawing for as long as he can remember.
After finishing
his studies, Mark N Tompkins tried to find his artistic voice and show off his authenticity.
Somewhere around the age of 28, he had produced his first artworks. However,
dissatisfied with the result, he had destroyed many of the works from that
period. The process of visual authenticity is not an easy one. Mark N Tompkins
was looking for all that, in fact, he is still looking for it today, always experimenting,
perfecting, fine-tuning with his temperament.
Around that
age, he applied to an art contest that accepted works in two categories: paintings
and digital drawings. In these works, using irony, absurdity, grotesque and
humor, Mark N Tompkins dealt with some of the contemporary phenomena, dealing
with problems such as consumerism, conformism, religious indoctrination,
pollution, species extermination, social inertness, etc. Since then, the artist
has remained true to his visual authenticity, creating expressive, provocative,
somewhat crazy, authentic, ideologically direct and clear art.
When asked
about the main difference between being a matte painter and scenic artist, Mark
N Tompkins states freedom of expression as the key distinction. Nowadays, he
mostly deals with establishing a flow for his art and narrative that would enable
some more ambitious images of monumental formats in a fairly different fashion
than he has been holding up till now. Since his art studio is filled with artworks that are waiting to be presented to the public, Mark N Tompkins is
planning a solo exhibition sometime this fall.
