Relationship between Painting and Cinema
Cinema and painting have always been in a close relationship, but some artists felt such passion for painting that they had to incorporate some of their favorite 'framed' moments into films with such precision that a person couldn’t help but wonder if there is a difference at all. Mark N Tompkins is a Canadian film and theater painter, or also known as a scenic artist, who equally loves painting and cinema, and has a perfect eye for details. Throughout his career, he has worked on many design sets and on a number of movies sets as an on-set painter. He’s born in Vancouver, British Columbia and studied at Capilano University in Vancouver in the animation program. This served him as a great opportunity to learn more about art and cinema.
A cinema is often considered as a synthesis of different art forms like fine art, photography, literature, theater, music, and others. It goes without saying that even though it is a unique art form, still cinema borrows elements from other art forms and uses them to create something new.
After finishing his studies, Mark N Tompkins started working at some small local theater where he had his first contact with scenic painting. Scenic art is one of the oldest artistic skill sets in the movie and theater industry, which still plays an important part in a production. While he was working at the theatre, Tompkins started helping produce scenic works for the plays, although they barely managed to accomplish the textures and painted effects for the theatre production due to lack of means.
His ability to work independently, accurately and to deadlines, and most importantly his outstanding artistic skills attracted the attention of an actual movie producer with years of experience in the movie industry. Even though he had never worked on a film before, Mark N Tompkins gladly accepted the offer and moved to LA where he immediately started working on his first film set. Since then, Tompkins has built an impressive resume as a scenic artist working on paint backdrops, murals and prop pieces for both theatre and cinema productions.
As a professional field, scenic painting includes a wide range of artistic disciplines that encompass an entire scope of painting and craft techniques. Scenic painting is a complex artistic and curatorial discipline that belongs to the interdisciplinary field of theater, architecture, visual arts, performance, installation, site-specific projects, text, new media, and presentations, but it is also an interdisciplinary art form by itself.
